Neurophysiology of the transpersonal states and traits of consciousness: What meditation and psychedelics can teach us about the self and healing

Dr. Cahn will provide an overview of his 20+ years of studies of the neurophysiologic and psychological correlates of meditation in expert vs. novice practitioners and psychedelics. He will also present research findings on the brain & mind effects of both meditation and psilocybin, specifically focusing on how the brain correlates to sensory and cognitive processing, highlighting similarities and differences.

About Speaker

Dr. Rael Cahn, M.D., Ph.D., is a Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry with the USC Department of Psychiatry. He directs the USC Center for Mindfulness Science and his lab at the USC Brain and Creativity Institute. He completed his Ph.D. in Neurosciences at UC San Diego, exploring the neural and psychological correlates of long-term vipassana meditation practice vs. the effects of psilocybin. Broadly, his research focuses on the neurophysiology and clinical efficacy of mindfulness, meditation, and psychedelic therapy for personal development, depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders.
